January is here - the month to make resolutions! The month to do everything right - then you can slack off for the rest of the year and say at least you tried! I thought I'd blog some of our resolutions for journal reasons and so you all can check up on me!!
Monthly Temple: Steve & I want to attend the temple every 2nd Saturday. Jill was nice enough to babysit the kids for us while we went. It was so nice to attend the temple again together. What a beautiful, reverent, holy place. My favorite place is the Celestial room where we can sit, reflect, pray and I can be with Steve. I also love that room because Steve always says, "Have I ever told you that you look beautiful in white?" Aaahh! The first time he said that was in the Logan temple when we were just dating.
Daily scripture reading: It sure has been hard for me to find a time to read the scriptures daily. When Steve told me his goal this year was to get to work at 7:00 everyday, I figured the perfect time would be at 6:45 - right when he leaves and before the girls wake up. This week I've enjoyed reading about the sons of Mosiah. It's hard to understand though, that within years of their beloved King Mosiah dying, the people had become wicked and needed Alma Jr. to call them to repentance. Goes to show that you have to be steadfast in the gospel always. I liked the analogy in a talk today about the Tortoise and the Hare. Because I am going to teach about that in preschool this week, my ears perked up. The speaker was talking about how no one was ever saved by one super long scripture reading session, or one super great prayer, etc. Slow and steady wins the race. Continual, daily scripture reading will teach you more about the gospel, bring you closer to the spirit and help you in your daily life more than sporadic super sessions. Same with weekly church attendance, daily prayer, regular temple attendance, etc. Great to remember as I'm working on my resolutions.
Weekly family scripture reading: Last year we got pretty good about holding FHE and reading from Emily's animated scripture book. But we thought we needed to be reading from the actual scriptures together. Now that we don't have 8:30 church, we are going to try to be all ready for church at 10:00, read for 15-20 minutes and then get to church on time. Today was our first day. We were ready on time, but E&E really weren't into it. I couldn't get Ella to sit for more than 10 seconds. And it was hard to explain everything to Emily so she wouldn't get bored and leave as well. So we shortened it today, but hopefully we can work up to something that will become meaningful for us. At least E&E have been seeing us reading scriptures. Today, Ella was flipping through my scriptures today saying, "Mommy's special book...careful."
Financial goals: This is my year to stress about finances. It's not really fair to start in January after a too-big Christmas! It will be good for me to track the money again so I will buy less wants. For me it's really not the wants that get me, it's the deals! I spend too much on things that are a good price. That's been a good way for me to get my food storage going, but I think maybe it's time to rely on that food storage a bit. Time to start buying necessities only so we can build up again. (I guess the 3 shirts I bought at the Kohl's sale will be called necessities! Well I only had 2 long sleeve shirts to my name and it's cold out now!!!)
The rest of the goals are normal things like become a perfect mother and wife, lose 30 pounds, put the laundry away the same day I wash it, keep a perfectly clean house, get to know my neighbors, magnify my calling, earn more money, be a better sister, get caught up on all my projects, etc, etc. Guess I'll have to keep working on those!
Here's some fun pics from the Sunday morning behind the scenes file:

Great ideas for the new year! You always have goals and that impresses me. The girls look absolutely darling! What fun to see them all "dolled up"!
I am sending 2 packages today.
Some of your goals are similar to mine--I just need to get started! I'm just trying to pretend it's not the 14th already. ;) Oh, and why on earth are you trying to lose 30 pounds?? That's way too much and you look great right now!
Could you describe how the "be a better sister" goal will benefit me? I'm just curious. Looking forward to it though!! :-)
What?! You do NOT need to lose any weight. So you can knock that one off your list! I really loved reading this post as it was uplifting and inspirational. I think you and Steve do a fantastic job teaching your girls the gospel by example and I admire all of your new goals. I loved the turtle/hare analogy too. I am sadly, more like the hare than the turtle. But it was good to read this and feel like just daily progress is what matters most. I think you are a wonderful sister and friend too. I have goals, but I'm so afraid of breaking them that I haven't even started! I liked your financial goals too. I am the same way- the deals get me too! I just bought a ton of things on way cheap clearance at JC Penney, but spent almost $100 in the end! I just can't resist sometimes. So, staying out of the stores is helping me (except for work!) Loved the pictures of the girls. Their hairstyles are just too cute! The matching dresses are adorable too. Thanks for being an awesome example to me!
